The Joy of Gaming Podcast, Special Edition:
Batman v Superman v The Marvel Cinematic Universe
On this special edition episode of The Joy of Gaming Podcast, we (Rich and Jordan) bring back the Comic Book Side Project for a reintroduction celebration. And celebrate we do, because comic book movies are absolutely everywhere. You can’t click anywhere online without stumbling across a new costume reveal or teaser trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man or Star Wars: The Force Awakens (which isn’t a comic book movie per se, but we’re still really excited about it). And we’re not the only ones.
On this episode, we introduce a new guest contributor to the podcast – Kevin Shaffer – who is not only incredibly, indescribably jazzed for the new Star Wars film, but is also a well-read comic book fan and geek culture enthusiast in his own right.
We begin the episode with a very opinionated discussion of all the latest comic book news and gossip – including superhero movies, comic books and anything even peripherally related. Then we move on to part two, a rundown of the comics we’ve been reading recently and the books we plan to read more of in the weeks and months ahead.
So it all starts here, dedicated listeners. This episode is the first appearance of Kevin Shaffer, so pick up multiple copies while you can. Let me just say, it’s a great time to be a comic fan. This…is the Joy of Comics!Tuesday Mar 31, 2015

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Unpopular Gaming Opinions with TrailerDrake
On this episode of The Joy of Gaming, we (Rich and Jordan) stay true to the spirit of Thanksgiving by bringing you a veritable feast of gaming-chat goodness. And joining us for the festivities is Drake “TrailerDrake” McWhorter – a man who should need no introduction to those who frequent YouTube gaming channels. He has been a regular contributor to both ScrewAttack and The Game Threorists, and also runs his own channel, TrailerDrake, where he espouses unpopular gaming opinions, breaks down the origin of Smash Bros. moves, and drops video game knowledge on unsuspecting victims.
We start the episode, however, with a discussion of a game that we’ve been hotly anticipating since its announcement earlier this year. Of course I'm referring to Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! – the follow up Gearbox’s 2012 loot-shooter masterpiece, Borderlands 2. We've both played The Pre-Sequel to completion and sampled each of the four character classes, so it’s time to compare notes and see if it lived up to our decidedly lofty expectations. We discuss the new additions (like laser weapons, low-gravity, OZ-kits, butt stomping, etc.) as well each of the new characters, the overall story, missions, and gameplay, before ultimately deciding just how worthy it is of the Borderlands name. We also discuss the other games we’ve been playing recently, including The Evil Within and The Walking Dead: Season 2, before touching on a bit of gaming news.
Next, we’re joined by TrailerDrake, and start the conversation off with a brief history of Drake McWhorter himself. How did he first fall in love with gaming? What twist of geographic fate led to his first job at ScrewAttack? How did he build his following on YouTube? These questions and more will be answered, as we learn about the man behind the geeky, glasses-adorned avatar. And then, taking inspiration from Drake’s popular YouTube series, we each discuss three of the most unpopular gaming opinions we hold. If you’re looking for some strong opinions on Spirit Tracks, Nintendo’s current place in the gaming market, and the were-hog levels from Sonic Unleashed, you’ve definitely come to the right place.
So join us, as we take a journey to Pandora’s Moon Elpis, travel through the twisted mind of Shinji Mikami, and then set the podcast on a collision course with one of the most original voices on YouTube today. This…is the Joy of Gaming!

The Joy of Gaming Podcast, Special Edition:
A Chat with Comics Creator Gabriel Dunston
On this special edition episode, we once again morph into the Joy of Comics Podcast to bring you a conversation with one of indie-comics’ newest and most original creators, Gabriel Dunston. Last year, Gabriel successfully Kickstarted the first volume of Purgatory Pub - a graphic novel that he both wrote and illustrated that imagines what would happen if the angel and devil left your shoulders and met up at the nearest watering hole. Book one was released earlier this year to excellent reviews, and now Gabriel is embarking on a new Kickstarter adventure to fund the next volume.
We were eager to talk to Gabriel about the book, of course, and a little bit about his Kickstarter experiences, but soon the conversation took on a life of its own. From Gabriel’s love of Spider-man, to his quest to develop his own artistic style, to the publication of his first mini-comics and beyond, what emerged was a real, in-depth look at the life of an indie-comics creator. Oh, and as Gabe is a gamer too, we threw in a little Pokemon, Unreal Tournament and Marathon chat for good measure. You can thank us later.
So take a quick trip over to Kickstarter’s comic section, and when you’re finished, be sure to join us for a night of debate and debauchery at the Purgatory Pub. After all, it’s apparently the only place in town where “Your glass is always half something.” This…is the Joy of Comics.

Fall TV Update – Gotham, Constantine, The Flash and More
We’re now a few months into the Fall 2014 television season, so we’ve decided that it’s an excellent time to check in on the new shows we’ve been watching (as well as some returning favorites) and give our overall impressions thus far. This year’s crop of shows definitely reinforces the fact that we’re in a new golden age of television, but as in any year, there are definitely winners and losers.
Some of our most highly anticipated shows - The Flash and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., for example - have gotten off to an amazing start, giving fans everything they were expecting and a whole lot more. Others - like Gotham and Constantine - have been a bit more divisive, offering a rather uneven experience from week to week, but also giving viewers occasional glimpses of the great shows they have the potential to become. There are also some big surprises – like Z Nation and Forever – but I won’t give away which side of the fence they landed on in our estimation.
And then, of course there are the bad shows, some of which have already been canceled, and some of which have become guilty pleasures for us. We’ll give you the whole run down, along with our predictions of which shows are destined for success or cancellation in the near future.
From How to Get Away with Murder to Cristela, and from Gracepoint to Star Wars: Rebels, no genre is safe from our critique. This…is the Joy of Fall TV!

The Joy of Gaming Podcast, Episode 50:
The Definitive Games of a Generation
It’s all led up to this – The 50th episode of the Joy of Gaming Podcast – and we are celebrating with an extra special episode. For starters, longtime podcast co-host Tim MacNeil is back to bring his unique Tim-ness to the festivities, and recent guest Kelsey Lehr also returns to fill out the roster in fine style. And of course, no special episode of the podcast would be complete without an appropriately epic topic. Therefore, we've decided to take a look at the entire last generation of video games – including Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii and PC – to compile our list of the most definitive games of the generation.
But before we get to the herculean task of rummaging through nearly a decade of video games, there’s the business of “what we’ve been playing” to attend to, and between the four of us, there’s a lot to discuss. Our conversation includes: Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, Super Smash Bros. 3DS, D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die, Destiny (and comparisons to World of Warcraft), Borderlands 1 and 2, Valiant Hearts, Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls – Ultimate Evil Edition, Final Fantasy Theatrhythm: Curtain Call, Assassin’s Creed: Liberation, Fibbage, Hearthstone, and more. We also delve into a bit of the latest gaming news and finish with a site update.
On this momentous occasion, to you the listener, we’d like to say: Thanks so much for all of your support. We’ve had an absolute blast these past 50 episodes: talking, occasionally arguing, and sharing our passion for gaming with you. Here’s to 50 more. This…is the Joy of Gaming!

Marvel Movie News - Iron Man 4, Doctor Strange, Amazing Spider-Man, FF and More
On this comics-themed special edition episode, we discuss all of the latest superhero movie news leading up to New York Comic-Con. But with all of the gossip, rumors and speculation swirling around on the internet over the past few weeks, we are admittedly left with far more questions than answers. Has Robert Downey Jr. really signed on to reprise his role in Iron Man 4? Is the Doctor Strange movie confirmed – or isn't it? What is the future of The Amazing Spider-Man franchise in light of the second film’s under-performance at the box office? And what’s up with Marvel and all of this drama surrounding Fox’s upcoming Fantastic Four film? We tackle these questions and more, and give our overall thoughts on the exciting (and very unpredictable) world of comic book movies.
And of course, no comic book podcast would be complete without talking about the books we’ve been reading over the past few weeks. Our discussion includes: The Fuse by Anthony Johnston and Justin Greenwood, Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters by Mike Grell, Southern Bastards by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour, Batgirl by Gail Simone and Ardian Syaf, Nailbiter by Joshua Williamson and Mike Henderson, Gotham Academy by Becky Cloonan and Karl Kerschl, Batman Eternal by Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV et al, Suicide Risk by Mike Carey and Elena Casagrande, Sherlock Bones by Yuma Ando and Yuki Sato, Gangsta by Kohske, and more.
One thing is certain – judging from the latest crop of comic book and graphic novel releases, the film industry has some amazing source material for the films of the future. This…is the Joy of Comics!

Fall Gaming Preview 2014
On this episode of the Joy of Gaming podcast, we (Rich and Jordan) bring you a celebration of our favorite season of the year. That’s right, Fall gaming season is right around the corner, and we couldn’t be more excited to discuss all of the exciting games we will all be playing over the next few months. From Assassin’s Creed Unity to Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel to Super Smash Bros. 4 (and beyond), this Fall is shaping up to be a season to remember. And whether you’re the type to get overly hyped (like Rich), or remain cautiously optimistic (like Jordan), there’s no denying that there’s a lot of gaming joy right around the corner.
But before we look ahead to gaming’s near-future, there’s the small matter of gaming’s present to address. If you’ve been on the internet at all for the past few years, there’s no doubt that you’ve heard the hype surrounding Destiny, Bungie’s new “shared-world shooter,” and the first new IP created by the company since they left the Halo franchise in 343’s capable hands. But does Destiny - and for that matter, can any game – live up to the seemingly impossible hype? We discuss all sides of the issue, and square off on the merits and shortcomings of Fall’s first gigantic release. We also talk about the other games we’ve been playing recently, including Minecraft for Xbox One, Velocity 2X, and Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls – Ultimate Evil Edition.
And although there’s a lot to be excited about, we still manage to meet our regular responsibilities of bringing you the latest gaming news, a complete site update, and a whole lot more. So come along, grab a controller, and take a look into gaming’s crystal ball with us – the view is quite impressive indeed. This…is the Joy of Gaming!

Fall Television Preview 2014
On this special edition episode of the TJOG podcast, we (Rich and Jordan) take a small detour away from games to talk about all of the exciting Fall TV shows premiering over the next few weeks. And I do mean all. From the shows we’re most excited about (like Gotham and The Flash) to the shows we have very little chance of watching (State of Affairs and Bad Judge spring to mind), we discuss a total of 47 new premieres and returning favorites, and let you know which ones are at the top of our individual must-watch lists.
Our discussion includes: How to Get Away with Murder, Forever, Scorpion, Constantine, Gotham, The Flash, Marvel Agents of Shield, Doctor Who, Intruders, Gracepoint, A to Z, Selfie, Marry Me, Cristela, Ascension, The Affair, The Mysteries of Laura, Z Nation, Stalker, American Horror Story: Freakshow, Star Wars: Rebels, Mike Tyson Mysteries, and many, many more.
This is the season when we find out which new shows will become hits, which shows will miss, and which shows will be cancelled after two episodes like last year’s Lucky 7. This…is the Joy of Fall TV!
